TOS Review: Math Mammoth

http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb374/TOSCrew2011/2013TOSCrew/MathMammoth/logo_zps1488a12d.jpg

The school year is quickly winding down for us!  Izzie, 6 years old, just completed her second grade math curriculum.  I decided that I wanted her to continue to work on her math skills throughout the summer, just to fill in gaps and to have more practice on a few concepts.  However, I didn't want to purchase an entire curriculum.  Thankfully, I was introduced to Math Mammoth!

Math Mammoth offers an affordable, quality math curriculum for grades 1-6 in their Blue Series.

Math Mammoth Blue Series books are worktexts (textbook and workbook combined) on specific topics. Each worktext in the Blue Series covers all necessary topics for the specified grade range and many are aligned with the Common Core Standards.

The Blue Series worktexts can be used:
  • To supplement any other math curriculum;
  • As a remedial material for students who are behind;
  • As a review material on specific topics.

There are a total of 39 Blue Series worktexts, each concentrating only on a few topics, such as:

                            Addition              Subtraction              Place Value

                             Clock                   Money                 Measurement

                        Multiplication             Division                  Geometry

The Math Mammoth U.S. Money worktext covers U.S. money-related topics, such as counting coins, making change, and solving various money problems in a total of 51 pages.

http://www.mathmammoth.com/images/mm-cover-US_Money-m.jpg

The worktext begins with first-grade topics such as counting pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.  It continues to more advanced lessons for second grade, and finally finishes with third grade topics.

Izzie really enjoyed using her pretend money, while completing the lessons.  She counted various amounts of coins and learned to make change.  Other topics included adding money amounts and solving problems.

We played store and I bought the specific items in the lessons.  I gave her the designated amount and she had to make change.  She absolutely loved doing this!  She loved that we were "playing" store and I loved that she was "learning" how to count coins and make change!

Be sure to check out more sample pages from the U.S. Money worktext.

The Math Mammoth Measuring 1 worktext contains 74 pages that cover measuring length, weight, and volume with a variety of hands-on activities aligned to the Common Core Standards for grades first through third.

http://www.mathmammoth.com/images/mm-cover-Measuring1-m.jpg

There is a list of manipulatives needed to complete the various hands-on activities.

Izzie had a blast with the Measuring 1 worktext.  Again, she was a huge fan of the various hands-on activities!

Here, she is measuring several objects around the house with baby shoes, then she repeated, using her shoes in order to compare the length.

In addition, she explored different ways of measuring, such as weight and volume.

There is a complete list of all concepts covered and a few sample pages for the Measuring 1 worktext.

Again, there are plenty of sample pages for the Early Geometry worktext.

What I liked:
  •  Izzie referred to Math Mammoth as her "Fun Math".  Do I really need anymore proof that this hands-on math curriculum is awesome?!
  • The numerous amount of hands-on activities throughout each worktext.  Izzie really enjoyed participating in math, not just simply completing a worksheet.
  •  There's a large skills spectrum within each worktext, so your student can move on to the more advanced levels, when he or she is ready.  There's no need to wait until the following school grade level.
  • The variety of worktexts available.  If your child is struggling or needing more advanced problems in a particular area, the worktexts are a great way to supplement.
  •  Very affordable. The downloadable PDF worktexts are priced from $2.00 to $7.00.
  •  The worktexts were very easy to teach from; therefore, there is very little teacher preparation. In addition, there are answer keys included for each worktext.

TOS Review: Joyce Herzog

 photo joyceherzog_zps3c5942dd.jpg

This is only our second year homeschooling, but I've already discovered that our Achilles' heel is finding a reading program that is a perfect fit for our family.  Unfortunately, I must admit that we have tried several different reading programs with no sucess.  So, when offered to review one of Joyce Herzog's Scaredy Cat Reading Systems, I jumped at the opportunity.

Dr. Joyce Herzog is a former classroom teacher, who taught learning disabled students and continues to work with homeschooling families.  In addition, she is the author of many educational products, including the Scaredy Cat Reading System for elementary-aged students.

There is a placement test to determine which level is the best fit for your child.

Several suggested daily schedules are also included.

Please note that you will also need The Story of Letter Master, which is the foundation of the program.  It can be purchased as a comic/coloring book, the mini book, the audio CD or the video DVD.  The Story of Letter Master introduces the concepts of the rules and exceptions and connects them together in a story form.

How did we incorporate Scaredy Cat Reading System Level 3?
Izzie, 6 years old, used the reading system for three days a week during the review period.

We followed the suggested schedule from Dr. Herzog with a few modifications.

1.  Each lesson can be taught by using the accompanying audio CD or by reading the scripted lesson.  Izzie preferred me reading the lesson to her.  In addition, we read The Story of Letter Master, which is not included in bundle.

2.  Afterward, she reviewed the flashcard word pack for about 10 minutes.  It's suggested to do this daily for 5 to 15 minutes, 1 to 3 times a day.

3.  Then, she would practiced the Lesson's words and sentences by using one or more activities from the Teacher's Training section in the Teacher's Manual.  This averaged 20 minutes.

4.  If there was a game to play from the Fun Learning Pack, we played it.  If not, she would complete a few pages from the Student Activity Book.  This averaged 15 minutes.

5.  Finally, I would test her for one minute to see how many words she was able to read.

On average, the daily lesson took us an hour to complete.

qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq

What I liked:
  •  The mastery-based learning approach implemented within the reading system.  I didn't feel like I needed to rush Izzie through a lesson just to get to the next lesson.  She was allowed to stay on each lesson until she had mastered the concept.
  •   Izzie really enjoyed playing the games in the Fun Learning Pack!  The interactive games were a great way to introduce and practice the concepts.
  • There were a variety of activities in the Student Activity Book.  It's very well designed for differentiated learning!

qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq

What I would suggest for improvement:
  •  The Story of Letter Master, the foundation of the program, is not included in the Scaredy Cat Reading System Level 3 bundle.  When I received the bundle and was beginning to get all the components together, I saw this mentioned in the Contents Section of the Teacher's Manual.  I frantically searched through my package to see if the "foundation of the program" was sent along with the bundle. Thankfully, it was for the review.  However, I immediately thought of the parent who purchased the bundle, only to found out that the foundation of the program is not included in the bundle.  I would be very disappointed.  It would be very considerate to include The Story of Letter Master, the foundation of the program, with the bundle.
  • A condensed or better organized version of the Teacher's Manual.  I found the Teacher's Manual very difficult to follow.  There is a lot of good valuable information, just presented in a very confusing manner.
  • Izzie didn't care for the the Student Reader.  She complained that the there were too many words on the page and the words were too close together.   She also missed seeing pictures to accompany the stories.  A more child friendly reader would be helpful.

qqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqqq

I encourage you to sail over to read what other Crew Mates had to say about their experience with the different levels of Joyce Herzog's Scaredy Cat Reading System.
