Brown Bear, Brown Bear Creative Art Emergent Reader

The girls have been enjoying the book of the week, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? So, to celebrate, they made their own creative art/emergent reader!

Painting with a textured paint brush.

Painting with a red feather.

Painting with a yellow rubber duck.

Blue construction paper cut and paste.

A lot of glue and green glitter!

Purple dot marker.

Glue and cotton balls.

Ummm....looks like I didn't get any pictures of the girls making the black sheep! They clued curly black yarn on the sheep!

Watercolor paints.

I printed off the Brown Bear characters, then had the girls "create" each. Afterward, I simply cut out the completed animals and pasted them to the handouts below. I then placed them in page protectors in a binder...a BIG emergent reader!

Brown Bear Reading and Writing Activities with FREE printables!

Izzie's handwriting is improving! I taught her to write her capital letters first, which now I regret not starting with her lowercase letters and I'm even thinking now, maybe I should have starting with cursive writing...decisions, decisions, decisions! She has been struggling and basically refusing to write in lowercase. With a lot of praise (sometimes, begging), she's attempting to write in lowercase letters!

Since, we've been reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, she has been practicing writing the words, "I see".

Letter I...she wanted to see if she could write 100 letter I's!

Letters "s" and "e"...she starts with the homemade sandpaper letter (to practice the correct stroke), then moves on to the large tracing letter (inside sheet protector, so she can reuse), and finally she writes the individual letters on her dry-erase board.

Putting the letters together to write the word "see".

Writing the sight word "see" and then reading the simple sentences!

Brown Bear Writing Sight Word See

Cutting and pasting the newest sight word, "see".

I've included the handouts for this cut and paste activity. **However, please notice that the pictures are missing.** You could have your child draw in the correct picture or do a little cutting and pasting, like I did. I was unable to find any Brown Bear characters clip art on-line, but I did found some here. So, I printed the characters off, taped them onto the handouts, and made a copy (so, Izzie could color the characters).

She also completed activities for sight words, "I" "see" and "a", from Kindergarten Crayons Sight Words Packet. Worth the $15! A variety of sight word activities for the entire year!

Throughout the week, she retold the story to Mac (priceless) using the story-props!

And she read these simple sentences from the book, then matched up the correct character.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear Math Activities

Here are a few Brown Bear, Brown Bear math activities that Izzie completed...

M&M Activity with handouts, which can be found here.

Coloring the animals from the book the correct color...

Then, sorting M&M's by color...

Counting and graphing the correct amount of each color...

Enjoying eating the M&M's, one at a time!

Finally, analyzing the graph and writing the correct number of M&M's for each color.

Izzie completed many activities from the Three Bear Family activity books, I found this entire set at a used curriculum sale for $8! Most of the activities were a review, but she was introduced to tally marks...

Izzie always enjoys the Roll and Color activities...

She completed several activities from Kids Soup, the following was her favorite...

Simple addition, using bear counters. The math strips were black and white, so I colored the bears to match the bear counters.

Brown Bear: Reviewing Colors

At the beginning of the Brown Bear, Brown Bear Unit, Izzie did several activities to review colors...

Sorting counting bears by color. Handout can be found here.

Matching the color clothespin to the correct color word. Cards are here.

Completing Roll A Color and Graph activity.

I finally purchased a color dice! Izzie loves these types of graphing activities.

I really liked how Shannon from Kindergarten Hoppenings added the space at the top, so Izzie could write the total number of each column.

If you haven't checked out Kindergarten Hoppenings, it's a MUST!!

Tot School: Brown Bear, Brown Bear

This week, Mac's activities were based on one of her favorite books, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?".

Shelf activities included:

1. Matching heads and tails puzzle. **Mac's favorite activity on the shelf.**

2. Brown bear sequencing cards.

3. Bear counters with matching color stacking bowls.

Mac decided that the bowls needed to be biggest to smallest, before she could add the matching color bears!

4. Magnetic puff pages.

She spent a lot of time reading this book! We always read to the girls before bed, this week, Mac insisted on reading to us!

6. Character shadow matching activity.

Other Brown Bear Activities...

Book related coloring pages.

Favorite activities this week: drawing, drawing, and more drawing!

We also spent one day at our local Children's Museum...it was Dairy Day! There was a mama cow, baby calf, and all the free milk you could possibly drink!

She loves applying her own make-up there!

Rocking and singing (as loud as she can) to her dolly!

To see what other Tots have been up to, skip over to 1+1+1=1.
